How does the safety (sister) clasp work?

Our Alzheimer's / Dementia Medical ID Bracelet uses a sister hook clasp. It takes both hands to open and close, so it's hard to take off by accident. That makes it a good choice for someone with dementia, autism, or anyone who tends to fiddle with or remove their bracelet.

How the sister hook clasp works

How to open it

  1. Find the clasp. It has a top and a bottom, with a small ring (the O-ring) on the chain holding it closed.
  2. Slide the O-ring toward the bottom of the clasp.
  3. Pull the two sides of the clasp apart so it opens into a V shape.
  4. Slide the O-ring around the clasp and off. The bracelet is now open.

How to close it

Do the same steps in reverse: open the clasp into a V, hook the O-ring back on, fold the clasp closed, then slide the O-ring back toward the top so it holds the clasp shut.

Tips for caregivers

  • Practice opening and closing it a few times yourself before putting it on your loved one.
  • Put the bracelet on when your loved one is calm and seated. Two free hands make it much easier.
  • Check the clasp now and then to make sure it's fully closed and the engraving is still easy to read.
